This is a substantial book, clearly written and packed with information that anyone interested in felting will want to read. Ruth is a fiber artist and has generously shared her extensive knowledge and experience within.
Techniques are explained, step-by-step, in an easy to understand way and over 800 colour photographs illustrate the text and make the book a joy to read.
Ruth explains all about wool and its properties and de-mystifies the process of fiber preparation. She also shows how to use a drum carder and how to dye wool.
You are shown how to make flat wet felt in the traditional way and also by using an electric sander, then how to make 3D pieces (such as hats and bags) using a resist. There is fun to be had making cords, spikes and beads that will add interest to your felted pieces.
Nuno (or laminate) felting is extremely popular for making clothing because it can be strong but lightweight and drapey at the same time and Ruth guides the reader confidently through the process.
Needle Felting (or dry felting) is used to make 3D figures and pictures. The instructions and photos are so clear and detailed that you feel you can’t wait to have a go! You can needle felt with either a hand held needle or by using an embellishing machine, and both methods are covered in depth.
This is definitely a book for the enthusiastic felter!
